01 / SELECTED WORK
A few things I’ve put into the world.
Recovered projects from the original joelmax.com. A window into the games, tools, and research that shaped my work.
Research 2010
EPSCoR · Environmental visualization
An undergraduate research project at the University of Nevada, Reno exploring ways to make complex, time-varying environmental data easier to understand. Supported by NSF EPSCoR and endorsed by Dr. Sergiu Dascalu and Dr. Franco Biondi.
C++ · Java · JavaScript · Scientific visualization
Resource Visualization in 3D: a two-semester senior project developed with Valjean Bud Clark and Edgar Portigal, directed by Dr. Sergiu Dascalu and Dr. Eelke Folmer. Built on ICE.
C++ · ICE · Windows
Engines 2009 onward
ICE · A rendering engine
A personal cross-platform rendering engine built to explore computer science through practice—from graphics and audio to tools and game development. The archive also includes the IcePick editor and model conversion tools.
C++ · OpenGL · OpenAL
Games 2009
SkeeBall
A graphics-course project built in roughly 30 hours, including Wii Remote integration. Realistic physics powered by Bullet; artwork by John Conelea.
C++ · ICE · Bullet · WiiYourself

Airhockey
An early substantial game built on ICE, with network play and an AI opponent. Socket layer by David Shelley, AI by Michael Picerno, and artwork by John Conelea.
C++ · ICE · Box2D
Tools 2009
Pathing
An interactive exploration of A* and Theta* pathfinding, with saved maps and batch tests for comparing search times across datasets and random inputs.
C++ · OpenGL · Qt

A charged particle in a magnetic field
A physics-course simulation from California State University, Chico, created with additional problems supplied by Dr. Christopher Gaffney. It plots a charged particle moving through a uniform magnetic field.
